Three people have lost their lives while 10 others sustained injuries following another tragic road crash along the Ishaka-Kagamba Road in Bushenyi District, leaving families and relatives mourning the unexpected loss of their loved ones.
The accident reportedly occurred on Monday at around 4:40 p.m. in the Omukatagu area along the Ishaka-Kagamba Road. The victims were travelling in a silver-grey Toyota Hiace as they made their way to Rwerere in Rukungiri District.
According to police, the vehicle, registration number UA 836AM, was carrying mourners who had travelled from Kashaka in Mbarara District. Their journey was reportedly interrupted when the vehicle encountered a sharp bend along the road.
Preliminary information from police indicates that the driver was negotiating the sharp bend when the vehicle allegedly lost control. The circumstances surrounding the loss of control are still being investigated by police.
The vehicle reportedly veered off the road before crashing into a pavement, resulting in a serious impact that caused multiple casualties. The crash left three adult male passengers dead at the scene.
Police had not yet established the identities of the three deceased persons at the time of reporting. Authorities are expected to continue with the identification process and notify the respective families as investigations progress.
Ten other passengers survived the crash but reportedly sustained various injuries. Following the accident, the injured passengers were rushed to Kitagata and KIU hospitals where they were taken for medical attention.
The condition of the injured passengers was not immediately provided in the initial police report. Their treatment and recovery are expected to depend on the nature and severity of the injuries sustained during the crash.
The driver of the Toyota Hiace had also not been identified in the initial information released by police. Investigators are expected to establish the driver’s identity as they continue gathering information about the accident.
Police officers led by IP Nkwasibwe Alfred visited the scene after the crash to assess and document what had happened. Officers reportedly collected information that could assist them in reconstructing the events leading up to the accident.
The damaged vehicle was subsequently towed to Ishaka Police Station, where it was taken for further examination. It will reportedly remain there pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles.
The inspection is expected to establish the mechanical condition of the vehicle and determine whether any mechanical fault could have contributed to the crash. Investigators will also consider other factors surrounding the accident.
Police have preliminarily attributed the crash to suspected speeding. According to the initial findings, the alleged excessive speed may have made it difficult for the driver to safely negotiate the sharp bend.
