EC Announces Fresh Nominations in Butaleja Following Death of NRM Flag Bearer

The Electoral Commission has appointed two days, the 27th and 28th of October, as dates for conducting fresh nominations in various electoral areas where nominated candidates have passed away
The National Electoral Commission (EC) has announced fresh nominations for candidates seeking to contest the position of Butaleja District Chairperson, following the death of Joseph Muyonjo, the recently elected NRM party flag bearer.

According to Julius Mucunguzi, EC spokesperson, the exercise will take place on October 27 and 28, 2025.“The Electoral Commission has appointed two days, the 27th and 28th of October, as dates for conducting fresh nominations in various electoral areas where nominated candidates have passed away,” Mucunguzi said.

He added that candidates who were duly nominated in the previous exercise will not be required to undergo nomination again.

Meanwhile, NRM leaders in Butaleja District are calling on the party secretariat to organize fresh internal elections to select a new flag bearer to replace the deceased.

Muyonjo, who served as Butaleja District Chairperson between 2011 and 2016, passed away at Masaba Wing, Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, after a long illness. He is remembered as a peace-loving leader and a strong party mobilizer. At his home in Bingo Village, Nawajofu Sub-county, relatives, friends, and supporters continue to gather to mourn his passing. Family members described him as a humble and dedicated leader who served his people with passion and integrity.

NRM Woman MP flag bearer Sarah Logose and Butaleja West MP flag bearer James Waliswaka described Muyonjo as a committed party leader whose death leaves a vacuum in the district’s political leadership.

Having won the recently concluded NRM primaries with a landslide victory against six other candidates, including incumbent Hegenyi Bore, Muyonjo’s death has left the party uncertain about his replacement.

While some leaders propose a direct appointment, others insist on fresh nominations, arguing that some previous aspirants have since defied the party by contesting as independents.

District NRM leaders Imran Muluga and Samuel Were have urged the party secretariat to give members another opportunity to democratically choose a new candidate.

The EC has confirmed it is ready to proceed with the fresh nomination process once the NRM submits its new flag bearer.Muyonjo, who had been bedridden for nearly six months, leaves behind seven children—four boys and three girls.

His body remains at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, with burial arrangements ongoing at his ancestral home in Bingo Village, where he is expected to be laid to rest on Sunday.
