It was an easy win for the incumbent male representative of the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the Arua Central Division Council, Twalib Ayub who scooped 78% in the three person race on Tuesday.

Ayub who also is the National Resistance Movement flag-bearer took home 21 votes as his independent opponents Abas Matata and Ahmed Umar shared a paltry three votes each.

One would be voter was reported to be sick while two others who should have completed the number of eligible delegates to 30 missed registration.

Ayub thanked the voters for their participation in this noble democratic process and entrusting him with the responsibility to represent them.

He said most of time in the first term was focused on advocating for skills training for PWDs on account for the low level of education within that constituency.

He also pushed for road safety measures for the school children with disabilities in Arua Primary school and Arua Islamic Primary School leading to painting of zebra crossings to protect the pupils.

However, Ayub said the next Term will primarily be educated to ensuring improvement in the working condition of the hapless cobblers in the central business district.

Mostly confined to sit under rickety old umbrellas near the taxi park and in front of the Arua main market, the cobblers who constitute a large section of the PWD constituency suffer the scorching sun in dry spells and cold rains when seasons turn rainy.

Ayub said he will convene a meeting of the cobblers and the division and city clerk to find a lasting solution to their working conditions.

He decried the low level of civic awareness among the PWDs and the political fictionalization that is a key driver of disunity among persons with disabilities.

“I will champion consultative representation and bring together PWDs to eliminate segregative politics,” said councilor Ayub.
