My name is Richard, and I come from Kampala, Uganda. I am a businessman, and one of the most difficult experiences my family has endured has been watching my only son struggle with alcohol addiction. Although he grew up in a comfortable environment with access to numerous opportunities, he spent almost 20 years fighting alcohol dependence, turning it into a painful journey for everyone close to him.
Initially, we believed he was just passing through a challenging period in his life. However, his drinking habits gradually worsened until they began interfering with his duties, relationships and future ambitions.
Sometimes, he would disappear for several days, neglect his family obligations and eventually return home in a state that caused us great concern.
We tried speaking to him, giving him financial assistance and encouraging him to change his ways, but nothing seemed to work.
As parents, we eventually reached a point of desperation. We had spent many years searching for a lasting solution, and seeing our only son continue struggling was emotionally draining. His mother suffered the most because she constantly feared that alcohol would ruin his entire future.
Despite being financially comfortable and able to afford many things, we realised that money alone could not solve the serious problem affecting our family.
