Uganda’s political scene has once again drawn national attention after Information Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi expressed willingness to personally visit the Magere residence of opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine.
The minister said he wants to see for himself the level of damage reportedly caused during a security raid and also assess the alleged injuries sustained by Kyagulanyi’s wife, Barbie Itungo Kyagulanyi.
Speaking in his capacity as government spokesperson, Dr. Baryomunsi criticized what he described as the alleged persecution of family members of political actors.
He said that if there are any legal or criminal matters involving Bobi Wine, they should be handled directly with him as an individual and not extended to his wife or other relatives.
The comments come amid claims that security forces raided and laid siege to the Kyagulanyi home in Magere. Reports from opposition sources allege that the house was ransacked and that property, including furniture, was destroyed.
There are also accusations that Barbie Itungo Kyagulanyi suffered torture during the operation.
Dr. Baryomunsi, however, indicated that he has heard conflicting accounts about what truly happened. While he condemned any mistreatment of family members, he also cautioned that some of the reports circulating in the public domain might not be fully accurate. This, he said, is one of the reasons he wants to visit the home himself.
During a media appearance, the minister engaged in a discussion with National Unity Platform (NUP) representative Benjamin Katana, who strongly challenged the government’s version of events.
Katana insisted that the situation at Magere had involved serious human rights violations and demanded accountability.
In response, Baryomunsi maintained that he is human and cannot celebrate the suffering of a fellow politician’s spouse or family. He acknowledged that emotions are high on both sides and emphasized the importance of verifying facts before making strong public statements.
The minister openly admitted that some of the information he has previously relied on could be incomplete or inaccurate. He described this as a defect he intends to correct by going to Magere personally. According to him, a direct visit would allow him to speak with greater authority on the matter.
“I’m going to consider personally going there to see what exactly is happening,” Baryomunsi said. He added that he wants to understand who may be blocked from accessing the home and why. Such firsthand information, he argued, would help him communicate more clearly to the public.
At the same time, the minister defended the presence of security forces at Bobi Wine’s home. He said the NUP president is no longer an ordinary citizen but a high-profile political figure, and security deployment around such a person’s residence is not unusual.
Baryomunsi suggested that without security presence, individuals with bad intentions could enter the property and cause damage. He warned that such acts could then be blamed on the state, creating unnecessary political tension. In his view, what he called “modest deployment” of police and soldiers should not alarm the public.
This argument, however, remains controversial. Opposition supporters argue that the heavy security presence amounts to intimidation and collective punishment. They say it has restricted movement and created fear among residents in the Magere neighborhood.
As a trained medical doctor, Dr. Baryomunsi also expressed interest in examining the injuries that Barbie Itungo claims to have sustained. He said interacting with her directly would help him understand the nature and seriousness of the wounds she describes as torture-related.
He believes that such an interaction would allow him to provide more credible information to the nation. According to him, leaders should base their communication on verified facts rather than assumptions or political narratives from either side.
The minister also said that his visit could help clarify other issues, including the whereabouts of Bobi Wine and the general situation in the area. Confusion and speculation, he noted, often grow when official information is limited.
For many Ugandans, this planned visit is being seen as a rare gesture of engagement between the government and a leading opposition figure’s family. Some view it as a positive step toward dialogue, while others remain skeptical about the intentions behind it.
Human rights activists are closely watching the situation. They argue that beyond visits and statements, there should be independent investigations into any claims of torture or unlawful actions by security personnel. They stress that accountability is key to public trust.
Political analysts say the incident highlights the deep divisions in Uganda’s political environment. The relationship between the ruling establishment and the opposition has often been tense, and events at Magere have added to the strain.
At the same time, Baryomunsi’s comments show that some government officials recognize the sensitivity of actions that affect family members of politicians. His statement that punishment should not extend to relatives has been widely noted.
Whether the planned visit will take place and what findings may come from it remain to be seen. If it happens, it could provide new insights into what occurred during the reported raid and possibly influence public discussion.
In the broader picture, the situation underscores the importance of transparency, respect for human rights, and careful communication by leaders.
As Uganda continues to navigate political disagreements, many citizens hope that truth and fairness will guide the way forward.
