Suspects linked to the killing of former Villa player David Awori have reportedly spoken out after their arrest, claiming they did not know they had attacked a well-known personality.
The suspects, who are believed to be part of a Kifeesi gang, were arrested by police detectives following investigations into the brutal killing of the footballer in Makindye.
According to police, the suspects are also accused of stealing Awori’s iPhone 14 Pro Max during the incident.
Reports indicate that investigations began after security teams tracked the stolen phone, which was allegedly found in Kisenyi, Kampala.
A suspect identified as Frank alias Musezi was reportedly the first person to be arrested after police traced the device.
During questioning, Frank allegedly provided information that helped detectives identify and arrest other members of the group.
Another suspect, identified as Frank Araali, was later arrested and reportedly revealed details about how the group operated.
According to investigators, the suspects admitted that stolen phones and other items were usually sold in different parts of Kampala.
Police also reportedly discovered that the group used a Toyota Harrier vehicle during their operations and stored stolen property inside the car.
Authorities further arrested some girlfriends of the suspects, who allegedly admitted that their partners returned home with items believed to have been stolen.
The women reportedly told police that the suspects often came back with handbags, phones, shoes and necklaces after their night activities.
During interrogation, the suspects allegedly admitted that they attacked Awori but claimed they did not know his identity at the time.
“We are sorry, we had gone to work but we didn’t know that we attacked someone popular in the country,” one of the suspects reportedly said.
They claimed their intention was to steal from him and not specifically target him because of who he was.
The death of David Awori shocked Uganda’s football community, with many people mourning the loss of the former player.
Awori was remembered by friends, teammates and fans as a talented footballer who contributed to Ugandan football.
Police said investigations are still ongoing as they work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities have continued warning the public about criminal gangs involved in robbery and violent attacks, especially during night hours.
The arrest of the suspects has brought some relief to Awori’s family and supporters who have been demanding justice.
Police are expected to present the suspects in court as investigations continue.
The case has once again raised concerns about rising criminal activities in some parts of Kampala and the need for stronger security measures.
