Former Kasese District Woman MP and ex-Leader of Opposition Winnie Kiiza has broken her silence following reports circulating on social media claiming that she had left Uganda and gone into exile.
Kiiza dismissed the reports, telling the public to ignore the rumours that suggested she had fled the country due to fears of arrest.
The former opposition leader responded after some social media users questioned whether reports about her alleged departure were true.
One user asked Kiiza on X whether claims that she had gone into exile were accurate.
“Maama is true you have gone to exile,” the user asked.
Kiiza responded briefly, telling the user to “Ignore” the claims.
Her response has reassured her supporters that she remains in Uganda despite the rumours making rounds online.
The reports emerged amid growing discussions about opposition figures who have left the country following arrests and legal battles involving political activists.
Several opposition leaders have raised concerns about possible arrests and charges linked to recent political events.
The rumours about Kiiza came at a time when former Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda announced that he would remain outside Uganda, saying he feared imprisonment.
Ssemujju said he preferred staying abroad while continuing political engagement rather than returning home and ending up in detention.
He cited the experiences of opposition figures such as Dr Kizza Besigye, Erias Lukwago, Muwanga Kivumbi and Sam Mugumya, who have faced detention over various charges.
Kiiza’s name was dragged into the exile discussions because of her long history in opposition politics and her former leadership role.
She served as Leader of Opposition in Parliament and became one of the most recognised female opposition politicians in Uganda.
Throughout her political career, Kiiza has been known for advocating for accountability, good governance and citizens’ rights.
Her supporters have continued to follow her activities despite her stepping away from elective politics.
The former Kasese legislator has not indicated any plans to leave Uganda or seek asylum in another country.
Her brief response suggests that she wants the public to disregard the claims circulating online.
The allegations come as Uganda’s opposition continues facing pressure, with several leaders dealing with arrests, court cases and political disagreements.
Political observers say the movement of opposition figures outside the country has become a major topic of discussion.
However, Kiiza’s latest statement indicates that she remains available and active.
