The health condition of veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye has once again taken center stage after the Kampala High Court ruled that his medical needs can still be handled within Luzira Prison. The decision has sparked concern and debate across the country, especially among opposition supporters and human rights advocates.
Justice Emmanuel Baguma, who presided over the matter, declined to order Besigye’s transfer to a specialized medical facility outside prison. He stated that there was no sufficient evidence presented to prove that Luzira Prison could not manage Besigye’s current health condition.
“At this stage, I have not seen any evidence suggesting that his health concerns cannot be handled in Luzira prison,” Justice Baguma said. He added that the court would wait for official communication from prison authorities if there were any significant changes in Besigye’s health.
The judge further directed that Dr. Besigye should be taken back to Luzira Prison, emphasizing that the prison medical system remains responsible for monitoring and managing his condition unless proven otherwise.
Dr. Besigye was not present in court during the hearing due to illness. His absence immediately raised alarm among his supporters, given his long history of detention-related health concerns.
His legal team, led by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, told court that Besigye’s condition was serious. They argued that he was too weak to even walk and could not meet his lawyers due to severe dehydration.
According to Lukwago, Besigye’s health had deteriorated to a point where continued detention without proper medical attention posed a serious risk to his life. He urged the court to consider Besigye’s age and fragile condition.
Despite these submissions, the court adjourned the hearing for three weeks, allowing time for further updates from prison authorities and medical officers regarding Besigye’s condition.
Outside court, Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima, shared a worrying account of her husband’s health. She revealed that he had been rushed from Luzira Prison to a medical facility at Bugolobi Village Mall under heavy security.
“I rushed there and found him on IV,” Byanyima said. She explained that Besigye told her he had been unable to walk and had to be wheeled into the health facility for urgent treatment.
Her statement further fueled public concern, with many questioning whether Luzira Prison is adequately equipped to handle such medical emergencies, especially for detainees with complex health needs.
The opposition party, People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), also issued a strong statement condemning the treatment of their leader. The party accused authorities of denying Besigye adequate medical care and basic legal rights.
“It is a tragedy that a man who has dedicated his life to the health and freedom of others is being denied his own right to medical dignity,” the PFF statement read.
PFF leaders warned that continued neglect of Besigye’s health could have irreversible consequences. They called on the state to put humanity above politics and allow independent medical care.
Dr. Besigye has been in detention for over one year without trial, facing treason-related charges. His prolonged detention has been a major point of criticism both locally and internationally.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly questioned the use of national security laws against opposition figures. They argue that such laws are being used to punish political dissent rather than protect the country.
International observers have also expressed concern over Besigye’s case, citing violations of due process and the right to a fair and speedy trial.
Supporters say Besigye’s current health crisis is a result of prolonged detention, stress, and inadequate access to proper medical care while in custody.
On social media and in political circles, many Ugandans are calling for his immediate release or, at the very least, transfer to an independent medical facility.
As the court waits for further communication from prison authorities, uncertainty continues to surround Besigye’s condition. For many, the situation represents a deeper struggle over justice, human rights, and political freedom in Uganda.
For now, Dr. Kizza Besigye remains under prison care, while the nation watches closely, hoping that his health will not deteriorate further before the next court hearing.
