My name is Isaac, a businessman from Jinja. When I reflect on where I am today, it is sometimes hard for me to imagine that I am the same man who once spent his days on the streets asking strangers for whatever help they could offer.
There was a period in my life when I had almost nothing to call my own. I had no permanent job, no dependable income and no money to invest in a business. My survival depended largely on the small amounts of money that kind-hearted people were willing to give me.
Life on the streets was never easy. Some people would walk past me as though I did not exist, while others would make fun of my situation. There were even days when people laughed at me and told me that I would never amount to anything in life.
Those words affected me deeply. Sometimes I would return home thinking about the things people had said to me and questioning whether there was any possibility that my circumstances would ever improve.
I knew that I did not want to spend the rest of my life begging on the streets. I wanted to find work, make my own money and eventually become a person my family could rely on. The biggest challenge was that I had no idea where to start.
I began searching for small jobs, hoping that one of them would give me a chance to rebuild my life. However, finding reliable employment was not easy, and whenever I found temporary work, the little money I earned was rarely enough to make a meaningful difference.
There were times when I felt like giving up and began thinking that perhaps begging was the only life I could ever have. Even then, however, a small part of me continued to believe that my circumstances could change if I was given the right opportunity.
