The death of Tooro King Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV has left Uganda and the world mourning, with new details emerging about the illness that claimed the life of the 34-year-old monarch.

According to reports, King Oyo died while receiving medical treatment in the United States, where he had been undergoing management for cancer.
The Tooro Kingdom confirmed that the Omukama passed away at approximately 10:00 pm East African Time on August 27, 2026, bringing an end to a historic reign that lasted more than three decades.
The announcement was made by Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomire Akiiki after earlier reports about the King’s condition had caused uncertainty among his subjects.
Before the official confirmation of his death, social media platforms were filled with reports claiming that the monarch had passed away. However, kingdom officials initially stated that King Oyo was critically ill.
Later in the night, the kingdom released an official statement confirming that the reports were true and that the King had died while undergoing medical care.

The revelation about his battle with cancer has provided more details about the circumstances surrounding the death of one of Africa’s most recognised traditional leaders.
King Oyo’s passing at the age of 34 came as a shock to many people, especially because he had represented the Tooro Kingdom for more than 30 years.
The late monarch became King of Tooro in 1995 when he was only three years old following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick Olimi Kaboyo II.
His early ascension to the throne made him one of the youngest reigning kings in modern history and attracted international attention.
Over the years, King Oyo grew into his role as a cultural leader and became a symbol of Tooro’s identity, heritage and traditions.
During his reign, he promoted initiatives aimed at improving education, empowering young people, protecting the environment and supporting tourism in the kingdom.
His leadership journey was marked by the challenge of carrying the responsibilities of a traditional institution from childhood while growing into a mature monarch.
The news of his illness had remained largely private, with details about his health only becoming public after reports of his hospitalisation emerged.

His death now marks the end of an era for the Tooro Kingdom, which has assured its people that the royal institution will continue.
The kingdom has said that King Oyo left behind an heir, whose identity will be revealed at the appropriate time according to Tooro traditions and customs.
As preparations begin to honour the late monarch, attention is also turning to the future leadership of the kingdom and the succession process.
Many Ugandans have continued to express sadness over the passing of King Oyo, remembering him as a leader who carried the Tooro crown through changing times.
His death represents a significant moment in Uganda’s cultural history, ending the reign of a king who first took the throne as a young child and served until adulthood.
As the nation mourns, the legacy of King Oyo is expected to live on through the royal institution, the people he served and the heir who will continue the Babiito royal line.
