ARUA: THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2025

In a first of such a kind in Arua City, Betty Otekat Akello, the Resident City Commissioner and her Supervisor, Gertrude Collins Obed who is the Dean of resident district commissioners in West Nile, swapped the comfort of their office for the turbulent terrain of partisan politics.

The duo have thrown their weight behind Jackson Atima, the flag bearer of the National Resistance Movement and President Yoweri Museveni.

“I bring you greetings from H.E Yoweri Museveni. NRM Juuu!,” Akello said to to open her speech to the boisterous crowd at Lobidra taxi park in Arua Central Division.

The RCC said she was happy for the people for the big turn up for the rally and added that she was eager to see that the people translate their support into votes on January 15, 2026.

Akello reiterated that the politics of religion and tribalism has no place in Uganda and rallied the people to remain united under President Museveni’s leadership.

However, she said if the people vote for Museveni and not for Atima, they will have done a disservice to the president who handed the flag to the incumbent Member of Parliament in front of the people during his campaign at the Golf Club.

“Some people think that after voting president Museveni, they can go on to vote an independent or an opposition MP. Such a thing does not help President Museveni,” she asserted.

“After voting Museveni, make sure Atima Cuwaa!” said Akello as she gestured a tic with her finger.

On her part, Obed emphasized that unity is power and as such people should unanimously exercise their freedom by voting in support of Museveni and NRM sponsored candidates.

She urged the people to rise above apathy and go to vote en-mase. “We must make sure that president Museveni wins. We must make sure that Hon Atima wins,” she said.

Having secured the backing of the strong women of Arua City including Bakoko Bakoru, the former Gender, Labour and Social Development Minister, Atima turned his focus on dispelling propaganda from his opponents’ camps.

he displayed iron sheets tha he lobied from the office of the Prime Minister to roof Owino marktet and a Youth skilling center in Arua which he was falsely accused of selling to meet personal ends.

Atima also played recordings of his various parliamentary submissions on key regional and national development goals to counteract some of the allegations.

In one of the recordings from the East African Legislative Assembly, Atima rooted for improved security in South Sudan and Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

He appealed to the East African Community states to improve road networks to facilitate international trade and commerce and abolish obnoxious taxation and harassment of Ugandan traders.

That message sounded like a piece of cake to the audience that has closely knit business interests in South Sudan and DR Congo, responding with deafening Atima Oyeeee! in approval.
