The Masaka–Mbarara Highway was once again turned into a place of sorrow and heartbreak after a terrible road accident claimed the lives of seven members of one family. What began as a normal journey from Kampala ended in a tragedy that shocked the entire country and left many people struggling to come to terms with the loss.
The victims of the accident were identified as Ivan Niwagaba, his wife Brenda, Ivan’s brother Turihohabwe, and their four young children. The family was traveling together, filled with hope and plans, unaware that this journey would be their last.
According to information released by the police, the family was traveling in a Toyota Fielder. While driving along the Masaka–Mbarara Highway, the vehicle was involved in a deadly head-on collision with a truck coming from the opposite direction.
Police explained that the accident happened when the driver of the Toyota Fielder attempted to overtake another vehicle. Due to poor visibility on the highway at the time, the driver failed to see the oncoming truck, leading to a direct and fatal collision.
The impact of the crash was severe, leaving the small vehicle completely damaged. All seven occupants died on the spot, a painful reality that left emergency responders and witnesses deeply shaken.
News of the accident spread quickly across social media and local communities, with many Ugandans expressing shock, sadness, and anger. People could not understand how an entire family could be lost in just a few seconds.
Two days after the accident, hundreds of mourners gathered at Kyogo Church in Rukiga District to attend the funeral service. The church compound was filled beyond capacity as people came from different districts to show solidarity and share in the family’s pain.
Inside the church, the mood was heavy and emotional. The sight of several coffins placed together broke the hearts of many mourners, some of whom could not hold back their tears throughout the service.
Religious leaders who led the prayers called for strength, comfort, and unity. They reminded the congregation that life is fragile and that no one knows what tomorrow holds, encouraging people to trust in God even during moments of deep pain.
Family members and close friends described Ivan as a responsible man who loved his family deeply. Brenda was remembered as a caring and devoted mother who always put her children first.
The brother, Turihohabwe, was described as supportive and kind-hearted, someone who was always ready to help his relatives whenever he could. His loss added more pain to an already unbearable situation.
The four children were remembered as innocent, joyful, and full of life. Many mourners struggled to accept that such young lives had been lost before they could even begin their journeys in life.
After the church service, the bodies were taken to Rwamasyazo Village for burial. Thousands of people lined the roads and gathered at the burial grounds, turning the village into a place of shared grief and silence.
As the coffins were lowered into the ground, loud cries filled the air. Mothers wept for the children, fathers bowed their heads in silence, and many people stood frozen, unable to find words to express their pain.
Community leaders who spoke at the burial raised serious concerns about road safety, especially on the Masaka–Mbarara Highway. They noted that the road has claimed many lives over the years due to reckless driving and dangerous overtaking.
Police officers present at the burial used the moment to strongly warn drivers against careless behavior on the road. They urged motorists to avoid overtaking in poor visibility and to always respect traffic rules.
They emphasized that speeding and impatience are major causes of accidents and reminded drivers that arriving late is better than never arriving at all.
Many mourners also called on the government to strengthen road safety measures. They asked for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, improved road signs, and continuous public education on safe driving.
The tragedy has left a permanent scar on the Rukiga community. Families are now more fearful whenever their loved ones travel long distances, knowing how suddenly life can be taken away.
