For many couples, maintaining a healthy relationship with their in-laws can make marriage and family life much more peaceful.
However, some people struggle to earn the acceptance of their partner’s parents and relatives, particularly when there are misunderstandings, disagreements or past conflicts involved.
One woman from Kampala, Uganda, says she faced a similar challenge after getting married. According to her, her in-laws did not seem to appreciate her, regardless of how much effort she made to make them happy and feel comfortable around her.
She says she would often feel uneasy whenever she visited her husband’s family. At times, conversations became uncomfortable, while she felt that some of the relatives were constantly looking for opportunities to criticize or find fault with her.
In the beginning, she tried different ways of winning their approval, including buying them gifts and offering her help whenever she had the opportunity.
