The succession story surrounding the Tooro Kingdom has taken another dramatic turn, with reports claiming that George Kamurasi Desmond David has allegedly rejected the kingship despite emerging as the preferred candidate in the recent Babiito succession process. The development comes shortly after reports that Kamurasi had secured a decisive majority of votes from members involved in the process to identify the next Omukama.
According to reports from sources close to the succession discussions, Kamurasi is said to have indicated that he would rather remain with his family in the United Kingdom than take up the responsibilities that come with becoming the next king of Tooro. His reported decision has created fresh uncertainty over the future of the kingdom’s succession process and could force the royal family to consider other options.
The reported development comes barely a day after information emerged that Kamurasi had been selected during a closed-door meeting held at Fort Motel in Fort Portal. The meeting was reportedly attended by 18 of the 21 members involved in the succession process, with Kamurasi receiving 15 votes and therefore emerging as the leading candidate.
According to the reports, another member of the succession group, Musuuga Kamurasi, participated virtually, bringing the number of voters to 19. The remaining two members reportedly did not attend the meeting and, according to the information published, did not provide explanations for their absence.
Kamurasi had reportedly emerged as the preferred candidate after deliberations among members of the Babiito royal family. He is described as the son of the late Jimmy Mugenyi and grandson of the late Sir George Rukidi Kamurasi, placing him within the royal family from which the next Omukama is expected to come.
However, the latest reports suggest that the person selected by the elders may not have been prepared for the possibility of being offered the throne. Sources claim that Kamurasi was not informed in advance that he was being considered for the kingship and instead believed that his return to Uganda was connected to the burial of his brother, the late King Oyo.
One source quoted in the reports claimed that Kamurasi was brought back to Uganda after President Yoweri Museveni facilitated his travel, including a fully paid ticket for him and his family. According to the source, Kamurasi was allegedly told that he was returning to attend the burial of King Oyo and was not informed that the succession process could eventually lead to him being selected.
Sources reportedly explained that the decision not to brief potential candidates beforehand was deliberate. The reasoning, according to the account, was that informing individuals about their possible selection could create tensions if they were later consulted and another person won the vote.
The source claimed that the succession committee feared that a candidate who was informed about the possibility of becoming king and subsequently lost could develop resentment toward the person who eventually emerged victorious. The approach was therefore reportedly to keep the candidates unaware until the process had produced a winner.
That reported strategy has now become significant because Kamurasi is allegedly unwilling to accept the outcome. Sources claim that he would prefer to continue his life in the United Kingdom, where he has established a family with his British wife and children, rather than return permanently to Uganda to assume the responsibilities of the Tooro throne.
Kamurasi is also reportedly interested in continuing his sports career. According to the reports, his existing life abroad and his personal interests may have made the prospect of becoming a traditional monarch less attractive to him, especially considering the extensive cultural and public responsibilities associated with the position.
The situation has reportedly placed Kamurasi and his family in Fort Portal under heightened security. Sources claim that members of the Special Forces Command are providing security, with CDF Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba reportedly in Fort Portal as the succession discussions continue.
Another issue raised in the reports concerns Kamurasi’s marriage. Some sources have alleged that his British wife was concerned about the cultural expectations that could accompany his installation as Omukama, including claims about traditional marital arrangements.
However, those claims about his marriage remain allegations that have not been independently verified. There has reportedly been no public statement from Kamurasi or his wife confirming that concerns about marriage or cultural expectations played a role in the alleged decision to reject the throne.
The reported refusal has also raised a deeper cultural question about whether a member of the Babiito royal family can decline the kingship after being selected by the royal succession process. Some people familiar with the cultural argument have reportedly described such a decision as unacceptable under traditional expectations.
One source was quoted as saying that, within the culture, an individual entrusted with the throne by the royal family is traditionally expected to accept the responsibility.
