The Tooro Kingdom has confirmed the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, bringing to an end hours of uncertainty and conflicting reports surrounding the health of the 34-year-old monarch.
King Oyo reportedly passed away on Thursday evening at around 10:00pm, according to a statement attributed to the Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister’s Office. His death came only hours after the Kingdom confirmed that he was in critical condition and appealed to the people of Tooro to pray for him.
The announcement has triggered widespread mourning among the people of Tooro and across Uganda, with tributes pouring in for a monarch who had spent most of his life serving as the cultural leader of the Kingdom.
The Kingdom described his death as an immeasurable loss to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro and Uganda. It also called upon the people of Tooro to remain united, calm and prayerful during the mourning period.
The confirmation of King Oyo’s death followed a day of confusion after reports began circulating that the monarch had passed away while receiving treatment in the United States.
Those reports initially remained unconfirmed, leaving many Abatooro and members of the public uncertain about the true condition of their King.

The latest development raised questions about the Kingdom’s earlier explanation regarding the monarch’s stay in the United States. On August 3, the Kingdom had dismissed reports that King Oyo was seriously ill, describing them as false and misleading.
At the time, the Kingdom said the monarch was abroad for official engagements and to further his studies. However, reports that later emerged indicated that he had in fact been receiving medical attention in the United States.
Sources said to be close to the royal family reportedly linked the King’s condition to cancer and claimed that he had been undergoing treatment abroad. However, the specific details of his illness had not been officially confirmed by the Kingdom before his death.
The developments have led to renewed discussion about why information concerning the monarch’s health was not made public earlier and why his presence in the United States was initially explained as being connected to official engagements and studies.
King Oyo was one of the world’s youngest reigning monarchs when he ascended the Tooro throne as a child following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III.
His coronation attracted international attention because of his young age, and he remained a prominent figure in Uganda’s cultural and traditional leadership for decades.
As he grew older, King Oyo took on greater responsibilities within the Kingdom and participated in cultural, social and development-related activities aimed at strengthening the institution of the Tooro monarchy.
