President Yoweri Museveni has paid tribute to the late Tooro King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, revealing details of a final letter the former king wrote to him before his death. Museveni made the remarks on Tuesday as Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I was crowned the new Omukama at Karuziika Palace.
Museveni said he became emotional after discovering the letter shortly after King Oyo was buried. According to the President, he was going through his documents the day after the burial when he came across a letter dated June 15, 2026, which had been written to him by the late king.
“I was very sad because on the day after he was buried here I was going through my documents and I found a letter he had written to me on the 15th of June 2026,” Museveni said. He added that finding the letter after Oyo’s burial made him “very, very sad.”
The President said King Oyo had used the letter to thank him for several things, including his decision to appoint ministers from Tooro.
Museveni said the letter also showed that the late king was still communicating and appeared to be well at the time it was written in June.
Museveni praised Oyo for his service to Tooro and asked the new king, together with other traditional leaders, to play a role in protecting indigenous values, languages and traditional knowledge.
