Senior Dr Kato Reveals How He Rose From Last in Class to a First Class Degree in Medicine

My name is Dr Kato, and whenever I reflect on my academic journey, I sometimes find it hard to believe how dramatically my life changed. There was a time when I was among the students who performed poorly in class.

In some examinations, I would find my name at the very bottom of the results, and I began to feel that perhaps I did not have what it took to achieve much academically.
When I entered medical school, I understood that I had chosen a very demanding field.

Medicine required long hours of reading, strong concentration and a lot of determination. However, despite putting in effort, my performance during the early stages of my studies was disappointing.

I attended lectures and made an effort to follow what the lecturers were teaching, but whenever examinations came around, my marks were often far below what I had expected. Watching other students perform better than me gradually affected my confidence and made me question my abilities.

There were moments when I would sit in class and ask myself whether choosing medicine had been a mistake. I could see some of my classmates answering questions with confidence, while I often struggled to understand and keep up with what was being discussed.

My poor academic results also became embarrassing for me. I did not enjoy seeing my name close to the bottom of examination results, particularly because becoming a doctor was something I deeply wanted. The situation made the gap between my dreams and my academic performance feel even greater.

At some point, I began convincing myself that perhaps I would simply complete medical school with an ordinary degree after struggling through the course. I had almost accepted the idea that becoming one of the top-performing students was something that was simply not meant for me.

However, something eventually changed in the way I viewed my education, my abilities and the future I wanted for myself.
I realised that I could not keep using the same approach to studying and continue expecting completely different results.

I therefore became more deliberate about identifying the subjects and areas where I was struggling and began working on improving the way I studied.

I also began seeking advice from people who had performed well academically. Rather than feeling ashamed of the areas where I was weak, I started asking more questions and seeking different ways of understanding subjects that I found difficult.
