For years, I carried the pain of being rejected by the people I called family. I am a man from Gulu, Uganda, and there was a time when I had almost given up on the hope that I would ever sit down with my relatives and reconnect with them again.
Everything began after a serious disagreement developed within our family. What initially appeared to be an ordinary misunderstanding gradually turned into a much deeper conflict.
Hurtful words were spoken, emotions grew, and eventually some members of my family completely stopped communicating with me.
In the beginning, I thought the situation would settle after a short period.
I believed that, with time, someone from the family would contact me and we would have an opportunity to talk about what had happened. However, the weeks slowly turned into months, and eventually the months became years.
I made several attempts to reach out to my relatives. On some occasions, my calls went unanswered, while on others, conversations ended before we could properly address the issues between us.
Eventually, I stopped making the effort because every attempt only made me feel more unwanted. Being separated from my family and living without their support was deeply painful.
There were special and important moments in my life when I wished my relatives could be there with me, but I simply did not know what I could do to restore the relationship.
Many times, I asked myself whether my family would ever forgive me or whether the disagreement had caused permanent damage to the relationship we once shared.
